Austin Freight Systems, Inc. (AFS) was founded by Brian Sutton and George Copeland in May of 1996. The two industry veterans and owners of AFS have a combined 80 years of experience together in trucking and transportation. Both owners have considerable experience as pioneers in LTL freight consolidation prior to the opening of Austin Freight Systems. Starting in 1996 with two employees and 1 million dollars in revenue, Austin Freight Systems has grown into a corporation that now has a total of 19 employees. Austin Freight has a carrier base of over 10,000 trucking partners. In addition, the company hauled over 8,000 truckloads for their customer base in 2016. Moreover, with sales accelerating , AFS is one of the most dependable and trustworthy brokerages in America. Over 300 different shippers used Austin Freight Systems' services in 2016. As Austin Freight has grown, so has customer loyalty as evidenced by long-standing customers which have been with the company since its founding in 1996. With a proven track record in customer service and competitive pricing, the company has seen a revenue increase of 207% over the past ten years.

CEO/Owner

An entrepreneur, with more than 39 years in the trucking industry, Mr. Brian Sutton is a respected leader in the trucking and freight industry. Mr. Sutton was born in Kewanee, Illinois and attended high school in Burlington, Iowa. He started on the freight docks as an 18-year-old teenager during the summers. Mr. Sutton spent four years at United Parcel Service (UPS) in Corpus Christi, Texas while attending college. He graduated from Corpus Christi State University in 1981 (now known as Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi) with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management.

At age 22, Mr. Sutton became the youngest terminal manager in the history of Consolidated Freightways, (CF). While at CF, he started and opened the Midland/Odessa and San Angelo, Texas markets for CF from scratch. He came to Austin in 1985 as the Terminal Manager for ARA/Smith’s Transportation and built the first freight terminal on an open filed on Bagby Lane in far east Austin.

In 1989, Mr. Sutton joined Modaline, Inc. in Austin as the National Sales Manager. Mr. Sutton and Mr. George Copeland opened Austin Freight Systems, Inc., a freight brokerage in Austin, in 1996 to better serve the Austin and Texas Truckload, LTL and Flatbed market. Mr. Sutton & Mr. Copeland are experts in the Truckload & large LTL brokerage business, with an extensive & impressive customer following.

Originally from Del Rio, Texas, Mr. George Copeland received a BA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976. With more than 39 years of experience in the freight logistics industry, he brings expertise to the company. Mr. Copeland started in the freight transportation business with SMT Freight Lines in San Antonio, Texas as their Director of Customer Service from 1977-1982. He moved back to Austin to be the Terminal Manager for SMT from 1982-1989. In 1989, Mr. Copeland joined Modaline, Inc. as their VP of Operations from 1989-1996.

Mr. Copeland teamed up with Mr. Brian Sutton and started Austin Freight Systems, Inc. (AFS) in 1996. Mr. Copeland became the first Certified Transportation Broker (CTB) in the Austin area in February of 1999. At AFS, he is responsible for Finance/Accounting, Computer IT, Administration & Operations.

Active in the Boy Scouts of America for 12 years as an Assistant Scoutmaster, one of his proudest achievements was hiking across the Grand Canyon, north rim to south rim. Mr. Copeland is currently a Director of the Greater Austin Area United States Bowling Congress and a member of the Exchange Club of Austin.

Mr. Copeland said, “We founded AFS on the principles of honesty, integrity, and hard work. We deal fairly with our customers, employees, carriers, and do what we say we will do. Communication is the key to our business. We strive to uphold these principles.”

 

Director of Operations

As an Austin original, Jim Gunter has watched the Austin area grow enormously throughout his lifetime. After attending schools in Austin, he graduated from Texas State University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management. Jim started his career in the trucking business with Southwestern Motor Transport (SMT Lines). Jim worked for SMT for 14 years, and was always known as an operator, eventually becoming the Austin Terminal Manager. Jim is well-rounded and was trained in all facets of terminal operations while working as a terminal manager, including:
line-haul, local P&D, Class A CDL, City Dispatch & Road Office Operations, sales, truckload, & LTL.

After a brief stint with Red Arrow Truck Line and Action Express, Jim joined George and Brian at Austin Freight Systems in 1997. Quickly learning the brokerage business, Jim became the Operations Manager and has been instrumental to the company’s growth. He not only directs our customer service, but oversees our carrier relations as well. In 2007, Jim became a Certified Transportation Broker, the industry’s top designation.

Director of Operations

National Sales Manager

John Jones is the National Sales Manager at AFS. He has 30 years of business experience, including ten years as a General Manager at Cargill and sixteen years of logistics management experience, managing multi million dollar accounts. Before working in the industry, he attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
John is also an avid long distance bicyclist, even competing in over the road races throughout the years. He is married to his wife, Shirley, and they have two daughters.

IT Manager/Operations Lead

Drew has worked for Austin Freight Systems for 14 years! He specializes in IT but he does a little bit of everything at the office. He is also the Operations Lead for the Dispatch Team.

Inside Sales & Operations

Cole has worked for Austin Freight Systems for 10 years now! He is the Inside Sales Manager and runs Operations at the Austin Headquarters office.

In his free time he enjoys Youth Softball with his daughter and is an avid bowling champion!

Director of Marketing

Tara was born and raised in Austin, Texas. She graduated from Texas State University, majoring in Business Marketing from McCoy College of Business in 2010. She then went on to pursue a career in advertising where she landed her first gig with an Austin based agency at McGarrah Jessee as their junior media planner. Since then she has worked for other advertising agencies in the Austin area such as HCB Health & LatinWorks as their digital media planner. After some time freelancing for various companies doing anything from digital advertising to event planning, Tara pursued her dream of digital marketing and opened her own small business in 2014, called TSR Small Town Marketing & Design. In addition to the business, Tara takes on all things marketing at Austin Freight Systems, as their Director of Marketing for the freight brokerage company. She first started out as a filing clerk, and then moved on to a dispatcher. She has learned accounting to serve as a back up. Tara has also recently started working as a salesperson, managing her own customers as well as assist the CEO, and other salespeople on the team with making appointments and managing lead generation for the company.
Her passion is digital marketing, so her day consists of dispatching, reporting on digital campaigns and researching new innovative ways to advertise in the transportation industry, as well as assist wherever needed. She also plans all of the company events.

Personal Life: She is married to Richard Roberts and they have one son, James. She lives in Buda, TX and enjoys spending time with her family, working out at her mom’s fitness group, playing with her toddler, traveling when possible, and reading and learning anything she can get her hands on.

Mr. Copeland & Mr. Brian Sutton also founded Sutton Transport, a Texas Truckload carrier in 1999. The company has recently moved into the nationwide trucking network. Mr. Copeland & Mr. Sutton are also partners in numerous real estate ventures.
